Women in Science: Edith Purer and San Diego Salt Marshes
By Dr. Kellie Uyeda – Executive Director, UC San Diego Natural Reserve System

Kellie Uyeda, Ph.D. will give a presentation about Dr. Edith Purer and San Diego’s Salt Marshes. Dr. Purer was California’s first female ecologist and wrote a book about the plants of Silver Stand State Park. Dr. Uyeda’s talk will share more about Dr. Purer’s work in our unique wetlands. Kellie started working with the Natural Reserve System in 2020 as a lecturer for a Coastal Ecology course in Environmental Studies at UC San Diego. She also has been involved in planning Love Your Wetlands Day for the past four years as part of her previous role as a Research Scientist at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. She received her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Systems from UC San Diego, master’s degree in Ecology from San Diego State University, and Ph.D. in Geography from UC Santa Barbara and SDSU. She enjoys connecting people to San Diego ecosystems and is excited to grow community engagement with the Reserve System. Chapter meetings are free and open to the public.

Located across Village Place from the San Diego Natural History Museum (NAT), in the Casa Del Prado Inner Courtyard.

Chapter meetings are free and open to the public. Everyone with a love for wild places, biodiversity, and community is welcome!
