Torrey Pines Natural Reserve Extension

NOTE: This field trip is to the Extension, not the main Natural Reserve.

The Mar Scenic trail ascends steeply at times. It will be interesting to see how some of the area has recovered after a June 2024 fire. We will return via the DAR trail. The iconic Torrey Pines (Pinus torreyana) will be on display, a giant pack rat nest and, hopefully, some blooms courtesy of our recent rains. Bring H2O, a snack, sun protection, sneakers/boots with good traction, cell phone. We will be using iNaturalist to help identify and document native plants. If you are not familiar with the app, download it and I will demo it for you before we start.

Difficulty: EASY to MEDIUM (part of trail is deeply rutted), 2.0 mile roundtrip (3.3 km)
Plant knowledge: Beginner to Novice, Professionals are welcome!
Access: Open to all, no charge.
Required fees: None.
Amenities: None.
Dogs: Not allowed in Torrey Pines Natural Reserve or the extension.
