The San Diego County Fair is the nation’s biggest county fair, drawing in more than a million visitors each year.

“Get Out There” was the theme for the 2023 San Diego County Fair in Del Mar – a great opportunity for our CNPS San Diego chapter to promote sustainable native plant gardening with a very large and diverse audience. The San Diego County Water Authority graciously sponsored our garden exhibit to demonstrate water-wise landscaping practices.

Garden Team chair Christine Hoey together with Greg Rubin and Leo Hernandez of California’s Own Native Landscape Design donated their time, along with artist Edmund Piffard and numerous dedicated volunteers from our Garden Team, to help create our award-winning show garden titled “Where Did the Water Go?”.

Design elements included a beaver dam and dry streambed nestled in among the Cottonwoods, Tecate Cypress, and Arroyo Willows. Nature sounds, moving butterflies, a campfire, and screeching owl were very popular with children. Our garden exhibit won 1st place for show theme in addition to several other awards.
