BUG Community Science at Bird Park: iNaturalist Tutorial & Potluck

September 12 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us at Bird Park for a hands-on iNaturalist tutorial with Don Rideout, Bonnie Nickel, and Patricia Simpson. Learn how to make useful observations of plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife—and how your observations can contribute to CNPS’s statewide Biodiversity in Urban Gardens (BUG) community science project.

Bird Park is one of the public gardens participating in the BUG project, so iNaturalist observations made there automatically become part of the statewide study. You can also contribute beyond Bird Park by making observations around native plants in your own garden or neighborhood and adding them to the BUG Home & Neighborhood Gardens project.

Whether you’re new to iNaturalist or already use it, this is a chance to improve your observation skills, contribute to BUG, and learn how your observations can support community science wherever you explore.

What to Bring:

  • Your camera phone or camera
  • A favorite potluck dish to share
  • Native seeds, cuttings, or plants for the exchange
  • A folding or camp chair

After the tutorial, we’ll gather for a potluck brunch and native plant and seed exchange. You’ll also have a chance to see the progress being made as we expand habitat in the Bird Park Learning Garden.

This gathering is open to anyone interested in native gardening and the wildlife it supports. Plenty of street parking is available.
