FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I SHOP THE FLOOR BEFORE 9AM?

NO. We will form an orderly line along the sidewalk at CASHIERS starting at 8AM with entry allowed promptly at 9AM. Anyone with special needs may form a separate line along the walkway near the HOLDING AREA. Setting a hard entry time prevents confusion with our volunteers who won’t be ready to assist you properly until 9AM.

WHAT ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY?

We encourage anyone with disabilities to request assistance from our helpful volunteers. No one should miss out on the plants they want when they come early. The floor sale is on turf grass so the surface may not be good for wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, or motorized scooters. A separate entry line at the holding area will be available before 9AM for customers to pair with volunteer helpers. All other features like seeds tables, books, merchandise, and partnering organizations will be adjacent to paved surfaces.

A few volunteers speak Spanish. Please inquire at the Experts tent for assistance.
Algunos voluntarios hablan español. Por favor, pregunte en la tienda de Expertos para obtener ayuda.

WHERE DO I PARK?

Regular parking is permitted within Liberty Station’s public lots and along Cushing Rd. The parking lot immediately adjacent to the sale has been reserved for ADA spaces, public services required by the park (porta pots), and LOADING YOUR PLANTS! While you get your car, your plants are safe within the Holding Area. Volunteers will assist bringing plants to your car where ever you’ve parked. See the site map above.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR BUYING PLANTS? MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNTS?

1) California Native Plant Society Members should first check in with the MEMBERSHIP TENT and you will be granted the stamp that entitles all CNPS Members to 10% off all Plant purchases. New members can sign up before hand to make the process quicker by going here:

https://www.cnps.org/membership

2) Grab a rolling cart (if available) and pick out any plants you want and

3A) either reserve them at the Holding Area while getting more plants or

3B) if you are ready to check out, find a TICKET WRITER (volunteers wear badges) and they will tally your total.

4) Take the ticket to the Cashiers to check out. We accept cash (small change will not be needed), all major credit and debit cards, and for members only – paper checks with a valid ID and member stamp.

5) Retrieve your plants from the Holding Area OR simply take your plants to your car. Cart Running volunteers will be ready to assist so you don’t have to walk the carts back and they can help load plants if asked to do so.

BUYERS REMORSE? REFUNDS & EXCHANGES?

All sales are considered final when the plants leave the lot. Refunds must be issued day of the sale with the refunded inventory returned in good condition. We may under certain circumstances replace dead or dying plants within the month of October 2023 if we can obtain a replacement and your claim is substantiated. Those circumstances are limited to plant death resulting from specific nursery diseases that were not evident during the health screening or the plant sale set up. We will not refund a toppled, chewed on, neglected (dried out), or overgrown plant, but can provide advice or maintenance and care to improve regrowth chances if it’s still alive.

Reach out to plantsale@cnpssd.org for advice and concerns and to initiate a claim.

I HEARD YOU GUYS OFFER PRE-ORDERS & PICK UPS

Pre-orders are only for registered volunteers of the 2023 plant sale. The volunteer registration period is now closed.

I CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE SALE, BUT STILL WANT TO BUY NATIVE PLANTS!

If you can not make it to the CNPS San Diego Fall Plant Sale, there are plenty of great options available in Southern California. Try these fines nurseries:

I WANT TO VOLUNTEER!

Thank you for the request! While the volunteer shifts for the Fall Plant Sale are now full, there are opportunities waiting for intrepid volunteers to help improve the sales experience for next year. Roles include producing artwork, creating Plant Signage, helping with logistics and planning, and helping propagate native plants for fun, donation, or restoration purposes. Reach out to volunteer@cnpssd.org and let us know a little bit about your interests and expectations!

WHERE ARE THE PLANTS GROWN?

We are working with four big native plant nurseries this year. A huge thanks to Native West, Tree of Life, Moosa Creek Nursery, and El Nativo Wholesale Nursery in Azusa. Some plants are grown or tended by our members from previous events. All are checked for issues like light rooting, overgrowth, disease, pruned roots, and infestation at the nursery for optimal health before they get to the sales floor.

WHY DO SOME PLANTS LOOK “BAD”?

Plants that are difficult to obtain may be available despite not looking the best so that we can provide good selection. We’ve still inspected them for health, but they may still be summer dormant and just coming out of dormancy with the cooler fall temperatures. California native plants still experience seasons and will often lose leaves or “wilt” as an adaptation to survive the hot summer weather of our Southern California climate.

WHERE’S ALL THE DEERWEED? WHAT! NO _____________?

Native Plants are increasingly being used for public spaces! While that’s a really great thing for urban habitat, some species are all bought out before we can buy them. Deerweed (Acmipson glaber / Lotus scoparius) and Chaparral yucca (Hesperoyucca whipplei) are just two of them this year. Our very few yuccas available were grown from seed by members! Our nurseries are doing their best to meet the scale of the problems ahead, but there’s no sugar coating that “supply chain issues” are very real in an increasingly uncertain climate.

YOU HAVEN’T ANSWERED MY QUESTION!

Touché. Please direct specific questions to plantsale@cnpssd.org and please be polite! Our organization is run by volunteers who give their personal time to help the Chapter and our wild areas thrive!
