ABOUT OUR PLANTS
Where Are The Plants Grown? We are working with four major native plant nurseries this year: Native West, Tree of Life, Moosa Creek Nursery, and El Nativo Wholesale Nursery in Azusa. Some plants are also grown or tended by our members from previous events. All plants are carefully inspected for issues such as light rooting, overgrowth, disease, pruned roots, and infestation to ensure optimal health before they reach the sales floor.
Why Do Some Plants Look “Bad”? Plants that are challenging to obtain may still be available despite not looking their best, allowing us to offer a broader selection. We have a special limited section for these off-season, difficult-to-obtain, or uniquely conditioned species, including rare selections that may appeal to specialists, collectors, propagators, enthusiasts, or those seeking unique plants. Follow the signage to locate the Limited Selection area.
All plants have been inspected for health, but some may be summer dormant or just coming out of dormancy. California native plants experience seasonal changes and may lose leaves or appear wilted as an adaptation to survive the hot Southern California climate.
Why Are Some Popular Plants Missing? Native plants are increasingly used in public spaces, leading to higher demand. As a result, some species, such as Penstemons, bush poppies, and various sages, may be in limited supply. Our nurseries are doing their best to meet this demand, but certain plants may be sold out before we can purchase them.
Higher Prices for Some Species: Due to increased demand and higher wholesale costs, you might notice that some plants are priced higher. This reflects the challenges of growing and sourcing specific species in the current season.
