Birds & Habitat Walk at San Elijo Lagoon

Explore San Elijo Lagoon with longtime birder Maryanne Bache, who brings a unique perspective that connects birds and the native plants that support them.
At this time of year, many wintering birds — including ducks and shorebirds — have mostly moved on, and summer visitors such as vireos, terns, orioles, grosbeaks, and chats begin to arrive. Bird activity is spread across the lagoon, with some species visible over open water feeding and hunting, while others are more active in vegetation, where they forage, call, and build nests.
Maryanne has spent years observing and documenting bird life in the lagoon and continues to monitor seasonal changes and species presence. As a native plant gardener, she also shares insights into how plants create habitat and how similar principles can be applied in home gardens.
This walk offers a chance to observe both resident and migratory birds while gaining a clearer understanding of where to look and what to watch for in this coastal ecosystem.
Bring binoculars, a hat, and sunscreen.
