Celebrating Native Plant Week at Bird Park

Celebrating Native Plant Week at Bird Park – A Day Full of Life.
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Bird Park came alive to celebrate Native Plant Week — and so did its garden! Visitors were treated to a colorful, buzzing, thriving oasis, demonstrating firsthand how native plants create essential habitat for an incredible variety of wildlife. Everywhere you looked, the garden was teeming with life. Bumblebees zipped between blooms, butterflies fluttered by — including the first Monarchs laying eggs on our native milkweed — and lizards darted across sun-warmed stones. A bluebird delighted visitors by hunting insects right before their eyes, unbothered by the gathering crowd, and a Lesser Goldfinch was seen joyfully splashing in the newly installed bird bath, generously donated by one of our supporters.

Adults enjoyed exploring the garden through educational walks led by CNPS San Diego volunteers and taking part in a lively plant and seed exchange.

Meanwhile, kids had a blast with activities like making seed balls and joining the scavenger hunt — spotting all the wonderful creatures thriving among the native plants!

The day’s excitement made it clear: planting native species doesn’t just create beautiful gardens — it creates habitat for birds, butterflies, insects, and other wildlife, AND an oasis for people to enjoy and relax in as well. Thanks to our volunteers, generous donors, and all who joined us to celebrate, Bird Park’s Learning Garden is growing into a truly vibrant community space.
We are still seeking support to help us restore the remaining plots — donations of any size make a difference!
